If you are in
the 8th grade or higher, and know and love Basketball, we would like to encourage
you to apply as a paid referee.
You will go through a 3-5 session training course. Then you will be tested
with a written test and a practical floor test. The applicants will be called
to work by the rankings of their test results.
Although St Bernard's uses professional adult referees for the Senior division (Grade 8-10) games, most of our youth referees are current or former St Bernard's Basketball players. They are our children. A referee can apply when they are in the 8th grade or higher and attend training provided by St Bernard's. Returning referees must attend a refresher class each year. Evaluators attend early season games to critique performances and offer suggestions for improvement.
Basketball is
a very difficult game to referee. It is a fast moving sport played in a small
area. Referees are trying to keep the game safe and fair, watch the players
and the ball, interpret rules and make quick decisions. Unfortunately, close
spectator proximity allows parents to sometimes see something the referee
missed or to view it differently. It is essential that parents support the
referee and accept the decisions they may disagree with. Do not blame the
referees for lost games or opportunities. Teach your children good sportsmanship
by setting a good example. And remember, in a few years your child may also
be a St Bernard's Basketball Referee
